About MAI

The Academic Institute offers a unique therapeutic living experience. Residents live together in a house on the Newport Beach peninsula. By having college residents live together and attend school together students create lifelong bonds and have a secure support system to rely upon in times of trouble. The living facility is located in Newport Beach, California. Steps away from the beach, the luxurious house was remodeled with the academic program in mind. The facility is equipped with wireless internet access and is staffed with 24hour supervision.

A recent study conducted at the University of California Irvine (Alexander & Bickley, 2004) compared clients in traditional 90-day treatment to those in a treatment program that combined the same treatment with a college program. The researchers concluded that those who participated in the college program did significantly better than those in the traditional treatment program.

Why do the people in treatment + college do better than those in
treatment only?

Researchers suggest that individuals within a treatment program, like the Academic Institute, which combines treatment with higher education, succeed where others fail because it gives people hope, direction and increases their sense of self-esteem.

The general consensus among treatment professionals is that the longer a person stays in treatment, the better their chances of remaining sober. Numerous research studies have proven this longheld observation among treatment professionals. One semester of the Academic Institute is four months of treatment. Residents sometimes sign-up for two semesters because they have such an enjoyable experience in the program. The Academic Institute helps make extended treatment a more enjoyable and productive experience for people, aiding them in making the wise decision to remain in treatment longer.

One of the easiest ways to evaluate a program is to look at management. Our academic program combines leading experts in the field of addiction treatment with those in higher education to create the Academic Institute. Our staff has years of experience in administering this unique form of recovery.

The Academic Institute specializes in
MOTIVATIONAL ENHANCEMENT THERAPY

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a systematic intervention approach for evoking change. It is based on principles of motivational psychology, and is designed to produce rapid, internally-motivated change. This treatment strategy employs motivational strategies to mobilize the client's own change resources. It may be delivered as an intervention in itself, or may be used as a prelude to further treatment. Treatment outcome research strongly supports MET strategies as effective in producing change in problem drinkers.
