Welcome to the Morningside Academic Institute (MAI).  MAI was founded in 2006 to assist people suffering from addictions to alcohol and drugs who find themselves with academic problems. These academic problems may occur in the high school, undergraduate or post-graduate setting. While the student may have been accepted into a top tier University or trade school, somewhere along their academic career the addiction overwhelms the student to the point that their academic success is halted. The student typically withdraws from their classes or fails them altogether. The more fortunate alcoholics and addicts, realizing their problems, withdraw before it's too late and seek help. The Academic Institute is experienced in dealing with turbulent past academic careers and helps individuals regain firm footing on a solid academic ground.

We invite you to visit our entire site to gain a better understanding of how the MAI staff works with you or your loved one to maintain sobriety and manage their academic goals to completion.

The cost of the Academic Institute program is surprisingly affordable. Cost depends on many factors such as: whether the client is in instate or out of state, the length of the academic program, whether the client has previously been, or currently is, a Morningside client, and etc. In addition to all of the regular Morningside Recovery treatment services (therapy, case management, medication management, group counseling, gym membership, urinalysis testing, monitored living), residents also receive the Academic Institute’s services which include books, supplies, transportation, tutoring, academic counseling, career counseling, tuition, room, and board, gym membership, and more.

Some residents enter directly into the college program after completing thirty days of primary treatment at another facility, while others participate in Morningside’s regular treatment program before choosing the college program. If residents are admitted into the college program directly, it is recommended they arrive at Morningside Recovery at least one week prior to the first day of class.

There are several entry windows into the Academic Institute. The dates of entry into the academic program coincide with Saddleback College’s academic calendar.

Life Skills
Personal responsibility is the main component of success. The Academic Institute offers a series of groups and lectures on Life Skills. We encourage students to keep day planners and to fill out budget forms to keep track of their spending behaviors. During life skills groups we discuss such topics as: Ways in which a person should behave in the workplace, Communication Skills, Body Language, Active Listening, Getting Along with Roommates, Problems with Debt, Basic Understandings of the Law, Explaining a Criminal History to Employers, and more.

DEFINITION: LIFE SKILLS constitute a continuum of knowledge and aptitudes that are necessary for a person to function independently and to avoid interruptions of the employment experience (Brolin, 1989).
